Returning to the routine after vacation

Thanks for the photo, Bob!

So we’ve been home from our whirlwind adventure for a few days now, and one thing is certain: it threw us all for a loop.  We’re tired. The coffee pot has enjoyed a lot of attention this week. As has the pillow – our heads hit it early.

And the little man?  He is beat. Walloped. Rightfully so.

As somewhat newbies to the world of adventuring with kids, it’s a good lesson for us in terms of what it looks like to fly to the other side of the country for an all-too-short long weekend. Sure, it looks like fun and excitement, but it also looks like fluid naps, cranky baby, and confused body clock.

So how to deal with it?

  • Gently, kindly, and patiently.
  • With a bit of grace. Acknowledge that everyone is tired, a bit more short-tempered than usual, and in need of space to regroup.
  • Wiggle your way back into the routine. The first few days may be a bit forced, but the sooner the routine returns, the sooner the real personalities return. That means consistent naps, healthy meals, and early bedtimes. If your gang is anything like our gang, sleep will come easy after an exhausting trip.
  • Ice cream never hurts. A treat here or there to supplement the healthy meals and ease back into the real world. For the kids and the adults. Go easy on yourselves!
  • Start planning the next trip. If one thing is certain, there is nothing like one adventure to spark the urge for the next. Keep wandering, my friends.

How about you? What advice do you have to get back into the swing of things after a quick trip to a faraway land?
